A Kansas man has been sentenced to five years and nine months in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud in connection with a fee he charged to conduct an illegal autopsy.
Court documents detail that Shawn Lynn Parcells, 42, used his business, National Autopsy Services LLC, to charge more than 350 customers and receive $1,166,000.
Parcells pleaded guilty in May to the case, which detailed how he used false credentials to convince clients he was eligible perform an autopsythe Department of Justice (DOJ) said.
In one incident, Parcells received $5,000 because he emailed a copy of what appeared to be a final report he wrote, but no pathologist took the exam, the DOJ said.
U.S. Attorney Duston Slinkard said: “Whenever criminals deceive unwitting victims in the name of professionals, it’s disturbing, but Parcells’ plan is based on exploiting the grief and grief of others. The fact of bereavement makes his actions a particularly predatory crime.”
