Liverpool to offer James Milner a new deal with Jurgen Klopp pushing
Jurgen Klopp is pushing the Liverpool board to offer James Milner a new contract, Sources told Football Insider.
The versatile 37-year-old is currently due to expire this summer after signing a one-year contract extension with the Reds last summer.
Klopp, a huge admirer of Milner, is pushing the Liverpool board to replicate the offer and extend it for another year for the 2023/24 season.
The Germany boss believes Milner’s leadership and off-the-pitch performances are crucial to the atmosphere in the Liverpool dressing room and believes his departure this summer would be a huge loss for the club.
As well as his contributions off the pitch, Milner remains a vital member of the squad, making 32 appearances in all competitions this season.
He also contributed two assists in this campaign.
When Klopp arrived at Anfield in 2015, Milner was one of his first signings on a free transfer from Manchester City.
The Liverpool boss is a huge admirer of Milner and told reporters recently that he wants to keep playing.
“milly [Milner] want to keep playing,” klopp says“You can’t judge him by his age. He’s 37 years old and he doesn’t look like this in training.
“He’s a very important player.”
Talks have yet to start, but Liverpool are optimistic that once they do, a deal can be struck quickly.
