Liverpool will accept Matip offer as defensive changes planned

Liverpool are expected to sell at least one of their four senior centre-backs this summer, with Joel Matip most likely to leave, Sources told Football Insider.

The Merseysider is planning to let the club know that the cult hero, who turns 32 in August, is up for sale in the upcoming transfer window.

A bid of £10-15m may be enough to convince Liverpool to cash in on Matip, who has an injury history.

The contract of the former Cameroon international will expire in the summer of 2024, and the next transfer window is the last chance to secure a high transfer fee for him.

Matip is no longer the first choice for Jurgen Klopp’s side after a stellar 2021-22 campaign in which the club came close to securing a terrific quadruple.

Ibrahima Konate has become Virgil van Dijk’s regular centre-back partner despite his fair share of injuries.

Matip’s form has slipped in recent months, evident in a string of poor performances earlier in the year, including an own goal in the 3-0 loss to Wolves.

Matip Made 31 starts in the Premier League last season and made an impressive 43 appearances in all competitions.

But he has made 18 appearances in total this season and has only been in Klopp’s starting XI in nine league games.

Since joining the club on a free transfer from Schalke in the summer of 2016, Matip has won every major trophy Liverpool have to offer.

In total he made 184 appearances for the club and was well received by fans, who welcomed his eccentricities and consistently high level of performance.
