Manchester United confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League with a 4-1 win over Chelsea, with Marcus Rashford’s return to form a big factor in the win.
A combination of injuries and a decline in form has kept Rashford without a goal in less than a month after scoring 28 goals this season.
Against the Blues, the England star ended up scoring 29 goals, his highest tally in a single season since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
Rashford didn’t even start, only coming on as a substitute after the Brazilian was injured shortly before the half-hour.
It took Rashford a while to get used to the game, having missed the weekend’s game against Bournemouth through illness.
But he was barely available midway through the second half, completing five shots in the final 17 minutes, by which time he had been moved to centre-forward.
Three of the shots were on target and the other two were shots after the ball entered the box.
His goal made it 4-0, no doubt about it, but there was much to appreciate about Rashford’s game.
Over the course of the game, Rashford showed excellent possession, conceding just five times and finding his teammates on 91.7% of his passes.
He also completed two key passes to create chances for his teammates.
A thorn in Chelsea’s backline, Rashford, as usual, faced his defenders head-on, completing four successful dribbles, most of them directly into the penalty area.
Eric ten Haag will be delighted his star man is fit and firing again as the FA Cup final against Manchester City draws closer.
