Today, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. declared a major disaster in Guam and ordered federal assistance to supplement territorial and local recovery efforts in areas affected by Typhoon Mawar beginning May 22, 2023 and continuing.
The President’s action makes federal funding available on a cost-share basis to Territorial and eligible local governments, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations, for emergency conservation measures, including direct federal assistance within the territory of Guam.
Federal funds are also available on a cost-share basis for mitigation measures throughout Guam.
Mr. Benigno B. Ruiz of FEMA has been appointed to coordinate federal recovery efforts in the affected areas.
The damage assessment is still ongoing and other forms of assistance may be designated after the assessment is fully completed.
