Readout of President Joe Biden’s Meeting with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar of Ireland

Before celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. held bilateral talks with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar at the White House. The leaders reaffirmed the historic ties and shared values that connect the United States and Ireland, and the extraordinary bond between our two peoples. They discussed their countries’ shared commitment to continue supporting Ukraine in the face of brutal Russian aggression, and President Biden praised the generosity of the Irish people for hosting 80,000 people fleeing the conflict. They also spoke about their cooperation on a range of other global issues. As we approach our 25th anniversary, the leaders reaffirmed their firm support for the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and welcomed the Windsor Framework as an important step in preserving the agreement’s peace dividend. In addition, they discussed robust trade and investment between our two countries, and steps to strengthen the resilience of our economies.
