These Local Chefs & Restaurants Might Win James Beard Awards


James Beard Foundation Names 16 Bay Area Chefs and Restaurants James Beard Award semifinalist this morning. The prestigious culinary organization honored 11 chefs and restaurants in San Francisco, four in the East Bay and one in the South Bay.

Semifinalists in the Best Chef category: California, including:

  • Val M. Cantu, California (San Francisco)
  • Pim Techamuanvivit of Kin Khao (San Francisco)
  • Robbie Wilson at Le Fantastique (San Francisco)
  • Intu-on Kornnawong by Jo’s Modern Thai (Auckland)
  • James Syhabout of Commis (Auckland)
  • Akira Yoshizumi of Sushi Yoshizumi (San Mateo)

In the Outstanding Chef category, the foundation nominated David Nayfeld of Che Fico, an Italian-California restaurant in San Francisco’s Alamo Square.

The Outstanding Restaurant category includes Moroccan mainstay Mourad in downtown San Francisco.

Yuka Ioroi and Kris Toliao from Cassava will compete for the Outstanding Restaurateur Award. This modern California restaurant moved from outer Richmond to North Beach last October.

Birch & Rye, a modern Russian restaurant in the Noe Valley, is a semifinalist for Best New Restaurant.

Yasukochi is a semifinalist for Outstanding Bakery at San Francisco’s Sweet Stop, while Chef Vince Bugtong of Viridian Craft Cocktail Bar in Uptown Oakland is in the running for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker.

In the Beverages category, San Francisco’s Lazy Bear was named a semifinalist in the Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages category. Trick Dog was shortlisted for a good bar.

Marina grand dame the House of Prime Rib is a semi-finalist for the Outstanding Hotel Award.

Finally, the foundation named chefs Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino of Cafe Ohlone in Berkeley as semifinalists in the Emerging Chef category.

The James Beard Foundation will announce nominees on March 29. The awards ceremony will be held on June 5 at the Chicago Opera House.
