This New Burrito Bar Bills Itself as ‘Chipotle 2.0’


A new casual Mexican restaurant is coming to South San Francisco, and the owner is calling it “Chipotle 2.0.”

Rafe Haddad, Behind the Scenes Guapas Mexican Grill, told The Standard that his restaurant will use more authentic, higher-quality ingredients than the ubiquitous homemade burrito chain, while giving customers complete control over how their burritos are made. He will also prepare quesadillas in the pizza oven and serve freshly fried churros.

If all goes according to plan, Guapas will open its doors on March 1.

A culinary school graduate and Bay Area restaurateur, Haddad sees Guapas as his third brick-and-mortar location. He also owns Truffle Poké Bar, one next door in Guapas and another in San Mateo. Previously, he worked as chef at Il Fornaio in Burlingame.

With three Guapas franchises already underway, Haddad expects to open more locations in the Bay Area later this year.

Haddad says he chose to move into The Cove’s storefront in Oyster Point, a business park on the fringe of “Industrial City,” partly because it’s adjacent to his poké place, and partly because it’s a thriving biotech hub with plenty of lunchtime eateries. transportation.

“We’re excited to open and provide healthy, high-quality Mexican food to the South San Francisco community,” Haddad said.
